“Window treatments.” This was a term my mother used when I was young; that year she decided to upgrade my childhood home to her liking. “Window treatments” sounded (at the time) like an old lady-ish endeavor: expensive and entirely uninteresting. Now, in my 30s, this term’s meaning has changed for me. Either I, too, have become an old lady and grown fully interested in old lady-ish and uninteresting décor prospects, or my mother was really on to something when she decided to transform our house into a home.
For the record, she was on to something.
I remember my mother hiring someone from a nearby family-owned business—Blinds & Drapery Showroom—to come to our Bryan Mawr, PA, house to help her “liven up the place.” I was barely ten years old, but I remember thinking it was silly to have a professional help her to decide what curtains to hang and which shutters to install. Just go buy them and have Dad do it, I thought to myself. Little did I know that 23 years later, I would be consulting the same business for the same reason: Bryn Mawr, PA window treatment.
In fact, I found myself in the same exact scenario as she: feeling more excited about the changes than my husband and convincing my kids that windows were an important feature in the home; that “the time had come” to improve upon what we’d built thus far. I’m just like my mother…
I say all of this to say, I am a firm believer that windows can be dressed up or dressed down—and whatever you choose to do with yours, they will have a significant effect on the overall ambiance of the home!
At Blinds & Drapery Showroom, I found the perfect options to suit my family and the mid-century modern style of our house:
Pinch Pleat Drapes
These drapes are probably the most iconic look for mid-century modern homes. Do you know what these are? They are those wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling drapes with vertical pleating. The long, lean panels are great for privacy, but also slide open fully to let the light in.
Aluminum blinds
I’m not one for all-or-nothing when it comes to letting in some natural light; I like versatility and control. So, I paired my pinch pleat drapes with aluminum blinds so I could let light in without completely compromising my family’s privacy.
Roller shades
My husband wasn’t a big fan of this option (until after the install!). I just had to add that authentic mid-century twist to our kitchen, too. I wanted our large window over the sink to remind me of my grandmother’s, so I chose a gorgeous rough-textured roller shade in a muted forest green hue. I love it!
I know I may sound old lady-ish to some of you. But, mark my words—you’ll want to enlist the services of Blinds & Drapery Showroom one day soon, too. Give their team a call!
