Today, I’d like to provide you with some delightful ways to create a welcoming and cozy cottage space in your Bryan Mawr, PA, home. Interior design has always been a pastime love of mine—and I have become quite good at it if I do say so myself!
Achieving the perfect cottage style home is about embracing traditional trends (with a bit of a twist). Check out some ideas from the professionals here at Blinds & Drapery Showroom!
Furniture
Filter everything you choose through “coziness” and you will be on the right track! Instead of modern shapes and bright colors, choose more muted hues with warm undertones. Wing-back chairs and fluffy sofas or wicker framed furniture looks lovely. If you have a pet-free home, leather couches are timeless. Be sure to invest in a few throws to make it homey and inviting, though. Also, if you can find an old trunk to use as a coffee table atop a lush area rug, you’ll be pleased with the results!
Change the mood with new wall colors
This is an easy, affordable way to accomplish a cottage style. Choose a paint color that is muted/drab, like wheat or cream. Adding new cabinets or painting dark ones with a goose-egg green paint (at least one shade darker than the walls) is a gorgeous touch. Another detail which is indicative of a cottage style is to use a rich color on the trim—something slightly grayed (like a muted mint). In the kitchen, this trim should match the cabinets.
Install interior shutters
Interior shutters make great window treatments. They are classy, homey, they look like Grandma’s house while still looking like they came straight out of an HGTV magazine… And, they dress up a bare window and simple interior walls without locking you into a definite theme for the entire space!
Bring in the wood tones
This doesn’t mean you need to add floor-to-ceiling wood paneling everywhere (a-hem—1980s!), but you should embrace the warmth of various wood pieces and species to add texture in each room. For example, an oak kitchen table or root wood vases filled with flowers are just right!
Blend the old with the new
Combining old and new details like secondhand or salvaged windows, doors, frames, and vases are a great complements to new shutters, sofas, and rugs! Look for collectible clocks and put to use family heirlooms like quilts for that at-home touch.
Consider adding a “cozy corner”
Cottage style homes are known for their character—especially unique features like a window nook full of oversized pillows and rustic plank shelving (full of books). Maybe even add some corner corbels and a hanging China dish from your mom’s wedding. Can’t you just picture it?
