Not everyone loves the heat. And these days, most don’t want the uncomfortable summer temperatures seeping indoors. Of course, there are measures homeowners in the Springfield, PA, area can take: tighter seals on windows and doors, higher quality products, drawn curtains… But, did you know there are actually types of window treatments more suited for keeping your home cool during the warmer months?
Yes, we are in the Northeast, but we get a summer heat wave, too. All too often, residents in Springfield and the surrounding areas do not think about the costly effects of the summer warmth on their HVAC system and utility bills. The truth is, we take provisions to keep out the cold—but what do we do to support our homes in keeping out the heat?
At Blinds & Drapery Showroom, we want you cool and comfy all summer long! So, how do you attain that in your home before the heat hits? Call us, of course! But first, check out these suggested Springfield, PA window treatments known for their thermal support:
Cellular shades
These are the most energy efficient window coverings on the market; made of beautiful fabric, pleated. These pleats form little compartments shaped as honeycomb-like pockets (“cells”) and come in a few different options: single, double, or triple layers to trap air and provide insulation. Also, they come in various light control factors ranging from sheer to opaque.
A couple notes on cellular shades:
- This option is actually a great choice for year-round insulation. The small cells trap air and provide a layer of protection regardless of the season.
- Cellular shades can be pulled up or drawn from the top down for added privacy.
Solar shades
Roller shades have been a very popular option for many years and are a nostalgic nod to retro and antique styles. Solar shades are a version of roller shades, manufactured using fabric mesh designed, specifically, to block the sun’s radiant glare from entering your home. They are sometimes referred to as “solar screens” and are perfect for reducing infrared heat gain and glare and for providing daytime privacy (while maintaining a view of the outdoors).
A couple notes on solar shades/screens:
- If privacy is important, this option may not be ideal. At certain times of day with certain angles of sunlight—like during the evening when the indoor light is more intense than the outdoor light—it may be easier to see in than to see out.
- Even though solar shades offer great insulation protection during the summer, they offer only a bit of thermal protection during the colder months. Lucky for us, we Pennsylvanians have high-quality windows and doors to keep out the cold!
Overall, cellular and solar shades provide a lovely aesthetic to any home. At Blinds & Drapery Showroom, we would love to help you reduce your energy spends and stay comfortable throughout the summer. Give us a call; we will see you soon!
