Interior window shutters are a beautiful choice for your Springfield, PA, home. They make an attractive addition to any style and décor and always make a statement with guests. Further, they are an economical option with all sorts of benefits for homeowners, such as energy savings, security, storm readiness, and protection from UV rays for your skin and furniture!
They do need to be maintained, though. As much as we would all love to have entirely self-cleaning and self-maintaining features in our homes, this just is not reality. So, to say it plainly, your Springfield, PA shutters benefit from a few basic rules. And, our team here at Blinds & Drapery Showroom want to share these rules with you!
Never, ever…
If you take away anything from this article about maintaining your shutters, let it be this: be careful of the type of cleaners you use on your shutters. Windex, some furniture polishes, and various harsh cleaners are bad news. In general, a mild dish soap or dish detergent will do for non-wood shutters. Some polishes are ok for wood, but you will want to confirm before using them. If you are ever in doubt, call us here at B&D; we will happily advise you!
Dusting and vacuuming are always ok
Regardless of the material your shutters are made of, dry dusting and vacuuming are always safe! The more often you use either of these cleaning methods, the less grime build-up in the future! So, if deep cleaning is not your “thing,” break-out the feather duster or your trusty vacuum!
Wood shutters are sensitive to moisture
We are saddened to learn a client has made the mistake of cleaning their wood shutters improperly. You see, wood shutters are quite susceptible to warping if left wet or damp too long. Wiping them down with a damp cloth is just fine, but your best bet is to go back with a dry cloth to absorb the moisture. Or, take the pressure off of yourself and break out the vacuum!
Vinyl shutters aren’t fussy
These are typically made of hollow plastic and are impervious to water and other substances that would be threatening to wood shutters. You can rinse them in a tub or sink for those annual deep cleans, let them dry, and re-hang if you want to. Or, you can do the easy thing and give them a good dusting and damp wipe-down every couple of weeks to keep them looking like new!
One last “never ever…”
This may go without saying—but we’re going to say it anyway: never slam or harshly operate your shutters. Their lifespan does count on your mindfulness of the right way to use them!
