We ladies all get squirrely in the spring and summer—wanting to redecorate and rearrange our homes. There isn’t a friend of mine who can’t relate. Scientists call it “nesting.” But, I don’t have children and neither do a few of my closest friends and we girls totally experience surges of wanting to make our homes nice, new, fresh, and ready.
My husband and I have entirely different ways of approaching organization. He makes random, messy piles of papers and mail, while I store needed papers is categorical order in decorative (and labeled) three-ring binders. The house we bought twelve years ago, here in Bryan Mawr, PA, has been a work in progress for a long time. Between my husbands “messes,” my surges of nesting, and the label maker—it’s taken us a long time to get our home exactly as we want it.
But, we did it. I’m not sure what we’ll do with ourselves going forward, now. I’ll probably fuss at my hubby and his “piles” and he will probably sigh and tolerate my springtime nesting.
Room-by-room, this is what we did; hopefully, it’ll help you with some ideas for your various spaces, too!
The Kitchen
Foot pedal sink. I’m a germaphobe. Thanks to Grey’s Anatomy, we now have our very own foot pedals to turn the water on and off to wash our hands during cooking.
Soft-closing drawers. Because… they’re so nice!
Top and bottom refrigerator. The average day includes opening the fridge 10+ times and the freezer… once, maybe? The freezer doesn’t belong up top (or even on the side—you lose out on usable space).
The Living Room
Window treatments. We took the plunge and sprung for window treatments from Blinds & Drapery Showroom. Whether you choose interior shutters (we did!) or customized drapes or remote-operated blinds, you’ll love how complete your home looks.
Decorative bins. Remotes, extra throws, cat toys, baby toys, etc.—a couple wicker bins with lids polish off your clean space.
The Bathroom
Storage solutions. We have smaller bathrooms and I used to get so annoyed by the piles of items under the sink and jammed into the tiny closet. Get creative. Add shelves. Build cabinets for above the commode. Add shelving inside your sink cabinet and purchase some inexpensive bins to organize the closet by category.
White-out. The color white looks clean and there’s no other room in the home you want to appear (and be) truly clean, especially when guests frequent.
The Master Bedroom
Window treatments. Again, customized window treatments really finish off a space and make it feel peacefully completed. In ours, we chose modern Roman shades from B&D Showroom.
Life-giving linens. The bedding you choose will set the mood for the room. Red—what a sexy room! Pale green and white—how calming. Grays and plum—a perfect balanced between masculine and feminine.
If you’re nesting—or just squirrely and in need of some permanent changes at home—consider some of these suggestions! They’ve certainly settled my anxiety and forced my hubby to be more organized… Why not start with your window treatments in Bryan Mawr, PA?
