Are you a soon-to-be brand-new parent? Cheers! If so, chances are good that you’re working on creating the perfect new space for your little one. There’s a special kind of excitement that comes with designing and decorating a new nursery. There’s also a special kind of pressure that comes with the creation of a baby nursery—even if we don’t recognize it head-on.
You see, between the conversations about “modern” nurseries, professional monthly pictures, and the constant competition in the baby industry to create the “Tesla of strollers”—it’s easy to find yourself overspending.
Reality check: as much as you love your growing family and that sweet little one preparing to make his or her entrance into the world, you’ve got to remember that this room will be used as a nursery for 1-2 years maximum. The time will fly by and you will find yourself redecorating and expanding as your little one grows. That said, I’d like to help you protect your wallet and keep your budget in check. Check out these budget-friendly decorating tips for your baby’s new nursery!
- Start shopping NOW
The closer to the due date you get, the more frantic you will feel to complete the space. So, make yourself a list, spend a little time each day before bed to search reviews online (if possible), and get going! You’re less likely to make quick, expensive decisions if you don’t feel rushed! - Spend the most money on the long-haul items
This include window treatments and coverings, artwork and frames, and the furniture that will remain in the room for several years. Suggestions:
- Window shutters. Investing in good window treatments for your baby’s nursery helps to finish off the entire look in the room, as well as provide you light mitigation to help your sweetie sleep well. Also, interior shutters are perfectly androgynous and classic (for those parents waiting to learn the sex of their baby!), which helps you to avoid purchasing the “wrong” color curtains! Note: If you live in the Bryan Mawr, PA area—I suggest checking our Blinds & Drapery Showroom!
- Neutral artwork. Photos of zoo animals or pretty still-life photos of flowers/plants are age-appropriate for a baby, toddler, and young school-aged child—and, they look tasteful in any décor!
- Full-size dresser set/bedroom suite. Don’t waste money on “tiny furniture,” no matter how darling it is. Also, look for dressers that can convert or double as changing tables/stations!
- Don’t be swooned by designer cribs
Seriously Designer cribs are a thing, now. Thank goodness there are more affordable, well-designed options out there. And, there are plenty of second-hand, gently-used baby store chains Before you’re dazzled into spending thousands on a crib, shop around! Again, your little one won’t use that crib forever! Look for:
- Convertible crib options. These are sold almost everywhere that sells furniture, now. This crib transforms into a toddler day bed—buying you years of additional time before Bid Bed shopping.
- Unfinished furniture. This is a relatively new concept to many, but there are stores and websites that sell unfinished cribs with detailed instructions for the customer to complete at home. Money saver!
I hope these tips help! And, if you’re in the area, go check out the window shutters in Bryan Mawr, PA options at Blinds & Drapery Showroom for your little one!
