There are some rooms in the home which are more exciting to decorate than others. Don’t get me wrong, I love taking on a new home project in any one of the rooms in my home but decorating the nursery for our first baby took the cake.
A year ago, about six months before our little girl arrived, my husband and I began our nursery project. I was, of course, emotional and excited. So was he, but he tried to hide it. We plotted out three weekends of “project time” to transform the small third bedroom in our condo here in Media, PA from a dumping-grounds of stuff-we-never-use into a perfectly girly little space.
We decided, first, on our color palette: white, gray, and pink. Not too much pink, mind you. We employed the 10-30-60 Rule. Pink: 10%, gray: 30%, white: 60%. We wanted a clean, bright white room and a white shag rug with gray furniture and crib bedding, and a few pink accents—blankets, picture frames, a music box…
One thing I knew we needed to invest in was new window coverings in Media, PA. We’d used Blinds & Drapery Showroom cellular shades for the rest of the house the year before, so we knew they would have the perfect options for this special project, too.
The first weekend was designated for painting. We had fun making memories and painting the walls and trim (and hours of touch up).
The next weekend, we built baby furniture. We are NOT carpenters—when I say “built,” I really mean we assembled our nursery furniture from the box instructions. It took the entirety of a weekend to complete a crib, changing table, rocker/glider…
The final weekend was the weekend of the “finishing touches.” Picture frames, the throw rug, washing and laying our bedding… I cried my way through the whole thing. And, of course, window coverings. Here are the two features we wanted most for our little girl’s new room:
Naptime planning—necessary nursery feature #1: blackout shades
Of all the advice we’ve received from parents—some invited, some not—there was one piece of advice that was nursery room specific. Parents told us to be sure we create a slumber-ready room; one that allows naptime, even when the sun is up. Great advice. This meant we needed blackout shades. So, we chose custom-made white Roman shades (with blackout lining) to blend in with the white trim and walls. The classic look of Roman shades is perfect for added texture and softness.
Future planning—necessary nursery feature #2: safety
Obviously, safety is a must; most importantly in a child’s room. Exposed lift cords or rear cords can be hazardous to little ones! Though ours still isn’t old enough to sit up yet, we wanted window coverings that would be safe and child-proof for years. We opted for cordless lifts on her pretty white Roman shades.
We worked one-on-one with our Blind & Drapery expert and we loved the results. Everything else, we did ourselves and the Roman shades match seamlessly. And, she sleeps peacefully at noontime, so this momma can rest! Working on a special room for your little one? Give Blinds & Drapery Showroom a call!
