Window coverings are often disregarded by homeowners preparing to sell their homes. This is a major oversight. These days, the typical buyer is looking for optimal natural light. Some of this may be out of your control, though. So, as you stage your home for walk-throughs, focus on something you can control: window coverings.
At Blinds & Drapery Showroom, we have dressed up and scaled down countless homes in the Springfield, PA, area—for new homeowners and those looking to sell. We know it is all about natural light these days; opening up the home and inviting the outdoors inside. It’s what homeowners and home buyers want, no doubt about that.
So, if you are preparing to sell, our team strongly encourages you to read this quick how-to guide to help get you prepared for a successful selling process!
Window Coverings Advice
Our best advice is broken-down into three parts: paring down, sprucing up, and removing/replacing outdated window coverings.
Paring-down:
The beautiful, heavy drapes you custom ordered from us six years ago to accent your personality and stylish home décor needs to come down—unless they are a neutral pallet and/or you have been advised by your realtor to sell them with the home. Buyers are looking for bright rooms, lots of natural light, and a semi-blank pallet. They need to be able to imagine their own things placed about your home, their own colors, and their own furniture—or that in which they dream to own. Heavy drapes—especially rich colored drapes—should be packed away so as not to prevent potential buyers from imagining themselves making a life of their own in the house. Note: buyers do want to see windows coverings in the bedrooms, so be sure what you have is neutral to encourage their imagination, while still presenting a “cozy” vibe.
Sprucing-up:
Before you list your home, you must thoroughly clean all window coverings you intend to display during the selling process. This means:
- Washing curtains and drapes—at home or at the dry cleaner (depending on the material; check the labels)
- Blinds or shades need to be wiped down according to the manufacturer’s recommendations
- Dust shutters and remove any stains
Removing/replacing outdated window coverings:
If any of your current window coverings are outdated, dirty, mismatched, or in poor shape, take them down. We would be happy to discuss your Springfield, PA window covering replacement options with which you are comfortable so as to enhance a specific room or rooms prior to selling—remember, this is what we do! We know, the idea of spending more prior to selling is an uncomfortable thought. But, the idea with home sales is to draw-in a buyer with deeper pockets and to impress potential buyers with accents that say, “come live here,” and “this is your new home,” and “see how well this owner has taken care of this house…”
Selling your home is a stressful process. It’s even more stressful if you are unprepared. Give our team at Blinds & Drapery Showroom a call and we’ll get your home sell-ready in no time
